THE class of 2017 has emerged as a brainy bunch after a high number of students achieved the perfect score.
A total of 36 students across the state earned the top Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) of 99.95 — the greatest number since 2014.
“Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would get it,” Balwyn High School’s Anne Pham said.
EXCITED STUDENTS SCRAMBLE TO GET VCE SCORES
The 17-year-old huddled around the computer with her family at 7am, where they burst out screaming when she discovered she was among eight girls to get the top ATAR.
“There was a lot of hysterics, a lot of tears.”
Year 11 student Anand Bharadwaj was the dux at Trinity Grammar with 99.95 but will return to the school for Year 12 and study further subjects in 2018.
The youngest student to finish VCE was just 15 from Essendon Keilor College while the oldest student was 70.
HOW TO READ THE STATEMENT OF RESULTS
Disbelieving VCE students repeatedly logged online to check their scores and ATAR yesterday, with that much-anticipated number marking the final end to 13 years of study.
The ATAR app and website had more than 160,000 views by yesterday afternoon — almost four times the number of students.
Lilydale High students gathered at school to celebrate their results and hailed the new results app a success after it loaded their results instantly.
The app replaced a bungled text message service, which last year saw 2000 students sent results five days early.
“I was worried it might crash,” 18-year-old Lana Adams said.
But her results came up as soon as she logged on — “a relief” it was finally all over.
While some schools didn’t get top ATARs or study scores, they had plenty of reasons to be proud of their students’ achievements.

Whittlesea Secondary College had its best results since the Black Saturday bushfires devastated the region almost nine years ago.
“We were the most affected school in 2009, we lost 21 community members — staff, students, parents,” assistant principal Tania Pearson said.
“These families, their focus after the fires was to rebuild their lives and their homes, education wasn’t a priority, understandably.”
Yesterday, the school celebrated six study scores over 40 and a high ATAR of 94.6 in dux James Davies.
“We’re absolutely thrilled.” Mrs Pearson said.
At Geelong North Secondary, many students have only been in the Australian education system for as little as three years after growing up in refugee camps overseas.
Principal Nick Adamou said one student earned an ATAR over 80, which may not be much for other schools but was an “incredible achievement”.
“I was so proud to see this,” he said.
