Victoria is the nation’s international student capital, with foreigners contributing more than a quarter of the total revenue of the state’s universities.
Almost $2.5 billion in overseas student fees were paid to the state’s eight universities in 2017, the latest financial report of Higher Education Providers reveals.

International fees made up 27 per cent of the Victoria’s universities’ total revenue of $9.2 billion. Overseas fees made up about a third of the total revenue for RMIT University, the University of Melbourne and Monash University.
Across Australia, international students’ contributions went from 16.3 per cent of universities’ total revenue in 2013 to 23.3 per cent (almost $7.5 billion) just five years later.
Overall, revenue of Australia’s universities was on the rise, increasing by $5.7 billion in five years, to $32 billion by 2017.
However, the proportion of Australian government financial assistance had dropped 5 per cent in the same period, to $17.2 billion or 53.6 per cent of total revenues.
