Public schools are chasing the tails of their private counterparts for perfect study scores in this year’s VCE results.
Private schools Methodist Ladies’ College**, Haileybury and St Kevin’s topped the state for pupils who secured a perfect score of 50 in the 2018 VCE, with 19, 18 and 17 respectively.
But government school Melbourne High was not far behind, in equal place with Melbourne Grammar School with 16.
THE SCHOOLS THAT SAW HUGE RISES IN VCE SCORES
VCE STUDENTS TAUGHT WRONG COURSE
Glen Waverley Secondary, Balwyn High and McKinnon Secondary also made the state’s top list for perfect study scores.
More than 20,000 names of students who scored a 40+ in the VCE and gave permission to be publicly identified* feature in today’s Herald Sun list.
Among them is Cheltenham Secondary’s Marwa Karimi, who was her school’s highest achieving student in English despite not being able to speak fluently until she reached high school.
Marwa couldn’t speak any English when she arrived with her family in Australia at nine-years-old.
A shy little girl, she remembers being laughed at by children in Grade 4 when she tried to talk to them.
“I never used to be confident in myself, that kept me back from speaking to people,” the now 18-year-old said.
She hit the books, became obsessed with reading and by Year 8, convinced herself that she had to be more confident or risk becoming socially isolated.
“I saw it as a really important thing because if you can’t communicate with people, you’re really creating barriers for yourself,” she said.
“I was trying to prove people wrong, as well.”
VCE RESULTS 2018 AND TIPS FOR LOW ATARs
Now, along with taking out Cheltenham Secondary’s top score in English, with a 42, Marwa said her language skills have “definitely impacted my social life, and I feel so much more confident in myself”.
The teen — who migrated to Australia, was accepted as a refugee and is now is a citizen — hopes to study biomedicine at Melbourne or Monash University.
English was the state’s most popular subject and private school students took out the highest number of 40+ scores.
St Kevin’s was the clear winner with 128 students getting a score of 40 or above in English, followed by Haileybury Girls’, then Haileybury.
But the public schools took top place in other subjects, including Specialists Mathematics and Studio Arts.
*Publicly available data includes 20,000 names of students from more than 500 schools who gave permission to VCAA to publish their results.
**Methodist Ladies’ College contacted the Herald Sun and requested their perfect score number be updated as five students had not given approval to be listed publicly. Any other schools that had silent listings are invited to do the same by emailing ashley.argoon@news.com.au.
