STUDENTS from an elite Melbourne college have ignited flares during an inter-schools athletics competition, marring the event for other pupils and young families.
Witnesses said St Kevin’s College boys were celebrating a title victory at the APS Sport combined athletics finals held at Lakeside Stadium, Albert on Saturday when the flares were lit.
Photos appear to show thick orange smoke billowing from the area a mass of St Kevin’s students were celebrating in.
The antics were described by one person as “disgusting”.
“They reclaimed the title,” a student witness from a rival college said. “It was classic celebrating, but then a couple of boys took it too far and set the flare in their grandstand.
“Smoke was carrying off outside. It ruined the whole day.
“Our school teachers tried to move us out as quickly and quietly as possible.”
St Kevin’s and the APS have both been contacted for comment.
It’s understood police did not attend the scene.
