Girls have laid down the law, with Victoria’s leading schools for high scores in VCE Legal Studies all same-sex girls’ schools.
Kew’s Methodist Ladies’ College topped the state in 2018 with 23 students scoring 40 or above in Legal Studies, followed closely by Richmond’s Melbourne Girls’ College (20 students), Burwood’s Presbyterian Ladies’ College (19 students) and Brighton’s Star of the Sea College (19 students).
The highest achieving boys’ school came from the Geelong suburb of Newtown, with independent school St Joseph’s College also registered 19 students on the high achievers list.
Powerhouse government schools McKinnon Secondary College and Balwyn High School both performed strongly, with 17 students and 15 students respectively, while Siena College, Caulfield Grammar School and Loreto Mandeville Hall recorded 17, 15 and 14 students respectively.
In total, there were 27 students with perfect scores of 50.
Achievement in Legal Studies is a strong foundation for students seeking to progress into a Law degree at university.
To excel, students had to demonstrate a strong understanding of the Victorian court hierarchy and vital tenets that underpin the legal system.
It is not a prerequisite for studying law at university and those with legal ambitions have a range of tertiary options available in Victoria.
Monash University estimates students need an ATAR of 98 for their Bachelor of Law, though students who qualify under the ‘Monash guarantee’ program, for Indigenous Australians, under represented or otherwise disadvantaged students, will be guaranteed a first round offer in 2019 if they scored 94 or higher.
Other universities offering a Law degree include Deakin University, which requires an ATAR of 91 for their Burwood campus or 84.50 for their Waterfront campus in Geelong. La Trobe University in Bundoora takes students with an ATAR of 90.1 and over, similar to Swinburne University’s guaranteed entry requirement of 90. An ATAR of 83.5 was the median taken for Victoria University’s Law program, while the Australian Catholic University takes students who scored 78.50.
Melbourne University, one of Australia’s leading law schools, does not offer undergraduate law for students coming out of high school. Aspiring legal eagles can complete a three year undergraduate degree and then sit the Law Schools Admission Test (LSAT), in hopes of earning a place at Melbourne Law School studying the Juris Doctor (JD), which is another three years of study.
However, the skills developed throughout the study of VCE Legal Studies will also serve students well in careers beyond the courtroom.
The analytical and communication skills are valuable in the broad study of humanities, which can span as broadly as academia, education, consultancy or advisory.
For students with an interest in politics or public service, Legal Studies should serve as a solid base to further involvement.
