Parents will finally be able to check their school zone under a new website as boundaries are set to change.

Families seeking out new schools will be able to enter their address on the site, to be launched in coming months, and learn immediately which zone they are in.

A review into school zones is being undertaken while some boundaries may be redrawn.

Education Minister James Merlino said there were anomalies in the current system.

They include overlapping boundaries where some homes may be allocated to two schools, or in some cases, to none.

“For decades schools and parents have found enrolment boundaries confusing and hard to find,” Mr Merlino said.

“It doesn’t make sense that you can’t look up your local school boundary online.”

He said before the website goes live, school principals were helping the government to clean up abnormalities in the dated system.

Schools will also be given more information about the capacity of their campus and expected growth.

Currently, some schools are unaware of how many students they are able to cater for, or how many students they should be taking from growing communities.

Enrolment boundaries are often reviewed to consider population changes and the opening of new schools.

Schools must take students in their designated zone, while nearby schools with capacity can take students outside of their zone.

A household’s zone applies to the closest school as the crow flies — this rule will remain, despite frustration from some families who have other schools closer by road.
