FOR those who don’t see surgical scrubs or a judge’s gown in their professional future, don’t fret. While the traditional pursuits of medicine and law draw the highest salaries according to the recent Department of Employment statistics, they’re not as in demand as other industries.

HERE ARE THE MOST IN-DEMAND JOB SECTORS:

CONSTRUCTION

Construction is a fast moving sector — there are many employers looking to hire temps to assist with completing projects and meet tight deadlines, says Susan Drew, Hays senior regional director. “There also seems to be a lot of jobseekers opting for temp work to increase their exposure and work on lucrative projects,” she says. Across Victoria, this isn’t set to change any time soon — the construction market is extremely buoyant, with high demand for skilled workers across the board in all sectors.

Jobs to consider: contract administrator, site managers and civil project engineers (recruiters report that there’s high demand).

EDUCATION

“The education market overall remains consistent, however, the type of positions sought are more technology focused and the early childhood area continues to be buoyant,” says Drew. She adds that within the education sector, there is a high demand for mathematics and technology-focused staff. Teachers who have IT skills and expertise are also sought and we’re also seeing demand for early childhood educators that possess a diploma. If you want to study education, it might be worth considering specialising in IT to be more marketable port-graduation.

HEALTHCARE

“The healthcare industry has experienced a significant period of growth and demand for healthcare professionals continues to be high,” says Drew. There is demand across the sector, especially in aged care, which is reflected in recent data reports from the Australian Bureau of Statistics: by 2040, an estimated one in five Australians will be aged over 65 and 1.2 million of them will be older than 85. According to Michael Ilczynski, managing director of SEEK Employment, the number of aged care roles being advertised on Seek has already increased.

Jobs to consider: Registered nurse, case manager, aged care worker, social workers within the disability sector, rehabilitation support worker, psychologist.

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

There are multiple entities within IT which makes it an exciting, fast moving sector. “We have found that more graduate opportunities are opening up to join Helpdesks and assist with specific projects,” says Drew. “With a large focus on cyber security within many organisations, individuals that possess skills and expertise in prevention of cyber-attacks and can put in place systems that can detect these are highly sought,” she says. Due to technology advancements and supply demands for androids, developers and programmers are also required within the IT sector.

AUTOMOTIVE

Nigel Muller, executive manager training, Auto Apprenticeships & Skills Development Centre, says the automotive industry is facing an ever increasing skill shortage across all sectors. “Over 27,000 positions across Australia are needed, and this is set to rise to 35,000 positions in the 2017/18 financial year,” says Muller. If you’d prefer to not get your hands dirty, IT-savvy people will increasingly be sought as emerging vehicle technology — self-parking, autonomous emergency braking and adaptive cruise control — becomes the norm.

Jobs to consider: Light vehicle technician, vehicle spray painter, panel beater, light and heavy vehicle technicians, auto electrical technician, sales people.
