NEW public spaces on Brisbane’s riverfront will be among the first projects constructed as part of the Queen’s Wharf development.
Echo Entertainment Group’s managing director and chief executive officer Matt Bekier says the company will prioritise the public riverfront revitalisation in a bid to keep Brisbane residents engaged with the seven-year project.
“In terms of construction, what we’re trying to do is bring forward some of the public realm quickly, particularly around the river,’’ he told couriermail.com.au.
The nearly 9ha integrated resort development includes 12 football fields of public space along with a pedestrian bridge to South Bank and six towers featuring hotels, apartments, restaurants and a casino.

Echo, along with Hong Kong partners Chow Tai Fook Enterprises and the Far East Consortium, won the right to develop the integrated resort and casino in July and will begin transforming the site spanning William and George streets in 2017.
The construction task is massive, with the State Government’s Executive Building on George Street to be torn down along with the Public Works and Neville Bonner Buildings.
Demolition won’t start until the State Government moves into its new headquarters – the “Tower of Power” on 1 William Street – with construction there due to be completed at the end of next year.
Echo estimates it will take two years to level the buildings and, once the works reach street level in about 2019/20, the integrated resort will begin to rise into the skyline.
In the meantime the consortium is waiting on final contract sign off and the passing of State Government legislation to hand over the state-owned riverfront land.
More than 2000 jobs will be created in the project’s construction phase alone, which is expected to last five years.
Later this month Echo will give Brisbane a taste of what’s to come when Queen’s Wharf does open in 2022, with a new campaign highlighting some of the resort’s features.
“(It’s) a long time to keep people excited about an activity so we thought that it might be good to really celebrate the success of Brisbane, but bring components of the new resort to life in September,’’ Mr Bekier said.
Activations will include the display of a 3D model of the proposed Queen’s Wharf development at Queen St Mall.
