South Australia’s Murraylands region has mourned the loss of a prominent long-serving former mayor of Murray Bridge and Karoonda after he died last month.

Widely respected leader, farmer and lawn bowler Allan Arbon died on January 24, aged 87.

In 1969, Mr Arbon was an elected member of the District Council of Karoonda and became chairman a year later.

He served as the district’s first mayor from 1979-81, returning to the reformed District Council of Karoonda East Murray in 1993.

In 2010, Mr Arbon was awarded the Order of Australia Medal for this lifelong commitment to public service.

“He was tough as nails to play against,” they posted on social media.

“His leadership and kind nature to all people was an example for us all, proud to have known him and have him as a friend. Thanks for the wonderful memories.”
