A study has revealed the Australian postcodes to live in if you want to live to 100 years old — one is only an hour from Adelaide.

Victor Harbor has ranked second on the list of places to live with 5.44 per cent of its population over 85 years old.

It’s joined in the top ten by Orroroo Carrieton in South Australia at 4.61 per cent.

Roslyn Walker, producer at Australia’s The 100 Project, a platform that celebrates the lives of Australia’s centenarians, said “the centenarians have vastly different life experiences but they have generally been busy and active people and engaged with their communities”.

The Advertiser spoke to 100-year-old Beth Baker from Victor Harbor to ask what her secret was to her long life and she said — being involved in her community.

“I have loved my involvement with the Victor Harbor Bowling Club and with the Adare Uniting Church,” she said.

Ms Baker joined the bowling club when she moved to Victor Harbor in 1984.

“I don’t play anymore but I do like going back every year for opening day,” she said

She said the church is a major part of her life and although it is difficult for her to attend in person her minister always visits her regularly.

The Victor Harbor centenarian’s advice for the younger generation is simple — “be kind to others”.

“I was always taught to be kind and I loved my parents,” she said.

“If you are kind then you will have friends and friends help you as you go through life.

“I am proud of my children and I know that they also are kind to others.”

Ms Baker enjoys knitting for her great grandchildren — all 22 of them.
