A price hike which will see public transport users pay up to 15 cents extra per ride from today (Friday) is a slap in the face for commuters, the state’s Greens party says.
As other household costs soar, Adelaide Metro announced from Friday prices for all fares will be raised by 2.5 per cent, rounded up to the nearest five cents.
The “standard indexation rate” has taken into account a number of factors including the Consumer Price Index, it said.
“All passengers can travel cheaper using regular, concession or student metroCARDS rather than MetroTickets,” a statement from Adelaide Metro said.
Those riding buses, trams and trains at peak times could see fee hikes of about 10 cents a ride if using a metroCARD.
Those travelling with a single ticket will pay 15 cents more per ride at peak times.
SA Greens’ party MLC Robert Simms was infuriated with the price increase.
“It beggars belief that we are seeing public transport fares increase in the middle of a fuel crisis,” Mr Simms said.
“At a time when petrol prices are soaring, and cost of living is going through the roof, the government should be making public transport free to provide relief.
“Instead, we’re seeing a fare hike. The Malinauskas Government needs to step up here, this is a slap in the face for commuters.”
