Police units watched a man drive at excessively high speeds twice without attempting to stop the driver, despite observing him reach as high as 181km/h in a 110 km/h zone.

On Monday morning, Blanchetown police on speed detection duties watched a Ford Sedan travelling at 157km/h in an 80km/h zone.

Later that day, about 10.45pm, the Barmera police detected the same vehicle travelling in Cobdolga at 181km/h in a signed 110 km/h zone, but did not stop the car.

Minutes after the second detection, The Ford crashed and was left abandoned just off Sturt Highway.

Police attended the scene, but were unable to find the driver at the time.

The man was found on Tuesday morning, about 6am, near Sturt Highway and police placed him under arrest.

The 36-year-old Burton man has been refused bail and would appear in the Berri Magistrates to face six different charges.
