Police are investigating a crash involving one of their own patrols and two other vehicles after a U-turn to stop the vehicle went badly wrong.

A police officer and another driver were taken to hospital after the crash between the police car and a Holden Astra at Gawler at about 9.45pm on Wednesday.

A police spokesperson said a patrol car travelling north on Murray St attempted to stop a vehicle travelling south after the car was seen driving without any lights.

According to police, the driver of the patrol activated their emergency lights and conducted a U-turn to stop the vehicle when a collision occurred with a black Holden Astra sedan travelling south.

The Astra then collided with a white Holden Cruze sedan travelling north.

The driver of the Cruze, a 54-year-old Gawler East man and the male officer in the front passenger seat of the police car were both taken to hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

The circumstances of the crash are being investigated.
