Panagiotis Toumazos, Fish Factory heir charged with child abuse offences

Shocking child sexual abuse allegations levelled against a member of another famous SA seafood family can now be revealed as he faces court.

Tiser Explains: How a criminal trial works

A second famous South Australia seafood family has been rocked by child sexual abuse allegations with another heir to the throne facing court.

Panagiotis Toumazos, a member of the well-known Toumazos family of Fish Factory fame, has been charged with making a child amenable to sexual activity, procuring a child for sexual activity and having sexual intercourse with a person under 14.

Mr Toumazos, from Prospect, was granted bail on the charges in September, the same month the alleged offences ended, according to court documents.

No pleas have been entered to any of the charges.

Mr Toumazos, who is known as Yioti or Yotis, on Monday appeared in the Adelaide Magistrates Court where details of his bail conditions were heard.

Those conditions involved Mr Toumazos, 36, checking in at Kingston Police Station, where his bail conditions allow him to visit for work on a nearby family farm.

Rino Zollo, for Mr Toumazos, told the court his client had been able to land some unique reporting conditions while facing the allegations.

“He works on a family farm about 10 kilometres out of Kingston … creativity has allowed my client to attend the Kingston Police Station to report by taking a selfie, then sending it to the officer,” Mr Zollo said.

Mr Zollo asked Magistrate John Wells if a change to those conditions could be made so Mr Toumazos could attend his Prospect home to carry out maintenance.

Fish Factory is a family owned and run seafood company specialising in crayfish.

It has operated since 1981, where it began in retail, and has expanded to fishing, processing, wholesale, distribution and export.

Mr Toumazos’s family farm, Murrabinna Pastoral, operates out of Kingston SE.

There is no suggestion either company or other family members are associated with the charges against Mr Toumazos.

The charges against Mr Toumazos came a month after another seafood heir, Marcus Carlo Cappo, faced the Elizabeth Magistrates Court on a slew of child sexual abuse offences.

Mr Cappo, 19, was charged with 25 separate counts including seven of procuring a child for sexual activity, seven of both producing and possessing child exploitation material and a further three counts of disseminating the same form of material.

Mr Cappo is a member of the Cappo Seafood family, which has been a mainstay of the Adelaide Central Markets and operated in SA since 1919.

No pleas have been entered to the charges and he will next face court in January.

There is no suggestion the charges against Mr Toumazos and Mr Cappo are linked.

Mr Wells granted the change to Mr Toumazos’s bail conditions.

Mr Toumazos will next face court in February.
