It might be wet and chilly outside but that is not enough to put a dampener on the winter extravaganza that is hitting the Bay tomorrow.
The Alpine Winter Festival is a new event running from June 25 to July 18.
From 6pm on Friday, the Glenelg jetty will be lit up as part of a light and soundscape show unlike anything seen in South Australia before.
Event organiser Stuart Duckworth said the light show was inspired by stormy weather.
“Storm is a lighting and audio show running along the whole foreshore,” he said.
“The lights look spectacular for afar but offer a whole different experience when you’re in the soundscape.”
As well as the jetty, the waters surrounding the pier will also be lit up.
The light show will be running from 6pm to 11pm every night of the festival.
Mr Duckworth said while ice rinks have been run at previous events at Glenelg, the Alpine Winter Festival’s one would offer a new and different experience.
“What we’ve done with the ice rink, it actually opens up to the ocean, so it feels like you’re skating on the beach,” he said.
Mr Duckworth said the event was all about bringing a European Christmas village feel to Glenelg during the colder months.
Adelaide market institution Gilles at the Grounds has curated a selection of quality local stall holders for the festival, offering everything from clothing, homewares to kids gear.
There will also be plenty of food options and live music.
Alpine Winter Festival kicks off from 4pm on Friday, and starts at 10am every day other day of the festival.
