A man accused of a horror stabbing attack on two women he did not know, killing one and leaving the other in critical condition, has flagged a potential mental health defence to the charges in his first court appearance.

Shaun Michaels Dunk, 30, on Thursday faced the Adelaide Magistrates Court charged with one count each of murder and attempted murder.

The health department confirmed on Wednesday Mr Dunk, who had been on an inpatient treatment order, had been released from their care on December 18.

Mr Dunk, appearing via video link still wearing the black T-shirt and beige shorts he was arrested in, made no application for bail on Thursday afternoon.

The court heard there would be an application for a mental health assessment report to determine whether Mr Dunk is mentally fit to instruct counsel, stand trial or be found guilty of the crimes.

“There is no application for bail today, but I am asking for Mr Dunk to be remanded under Section 269x,” his lawyer said.

Police prosecutors told magistrate Lynette Duncan they required a 14 week adjournment before any charge determination could be made.

Mr Dunk was remanded in custody until his next appearance in March.
