A man from Adelaide’s southern suburbs who allegedly sexually abused a child over a nine-month period has faced court for the first time.

The man, who is in his 30s, appeared in the Christies Beach Magistrates Court on Friday charged with one count of communicating to make a child amenable for sexual activity and one count of sexual abuse of a child. He is yet to enter any pleas.

The man cannot be identified to avoid identifying his alleged victim.

Court documents allege the man began communicating with the underage victim in January 2024 “for a prurient purpose”.

It’s further alleged he maintained an unlawful sexual relationship with the child following the communication – which both lasted until October that same year.

Both charges are major indictable offences.

The man was arrested on January 9 following an investigation by detectives from the Southern District Child and Family Investigation Section.

On Friday, Magistrate Todd Grant adjourned the matter and remanded the man on continuing police bail to appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court in April.
