A southern suburbs delivery driver who pleaded guilty to possessing more than 1100 child abuse files – some involving toddlers – is a “very emotional and distressed individual”, a court has heard.
Lance Robin Berry Reed, 47, appeared in the District Court on Tuesday in front of Judge Joanne Tracey charged with nine counts of disseminating child exploitation material, one count of possessing child exploitation material and one count of communicating with a child to make them amenable to sexual activity.
Defence counsel for Reed, from Huntfield Heights, conceded their client was a serious repeat offender and told the court he “copes poorly with life’s stresses”.
“It is certainly my submission that Mr Reed is finding this current time very difficult,” they said. “He’s never before spent significant time in custody.”
The court heard Reed had experienced a traumatic upbringing.
“In my submission, the psychological profile indicates that Mr Reed is somebody who is very emotional and a distressed individual,” defence said.
“In relation to the offending before the court, the charges are accepted on a full factual basis.”
Reed was arrested during an early-morning sting in March outside a public toilet block after he was found inside a cubicle.
Upon his first court appearance he appeared from hospital via video, nursing broken ribs and a punctured lung suffered during his arrest.
A police prosecutor said Reed started communicating with an undercover police officer online, stating he was a “46-year-old bisexual from Adelaide’s south” who would “love to f**k a 13-year-old girl”.
At his last appearance, prosecutor Hannah Bird told the court Reed was found in possession of 1107 files of child exploitation material, some of which involved the horrific abuse of “children from the ages of two to four”.
Judge Tracey adjourned the matter for sentencing later this month.
