One of the state’s most affordable private schools could soon be home to more than 150 new students under a new proposal.

IQRA College, the fourth cheapest private school in South Australia, has proposed building additional classrooms – welcoming 150 new students and 11 extra staff members.

The southern suburbs Islamic school has a total of 530 students and 85 staff, which would expand to 680 students and 96 staff respectively if the plans are approved.

A floor plan of the proposed development reveals the demolition of an external wall to allow for the construction of a new arts room, as well as new bathrooms, doors and windows throughout the building.

Parents at IQRA Islamic College, in O’Halloran Hill, are paying 22.6 per cent more this year – $2600 up from $2120.

IQRA College principal Hani Abul Khair said the fee increase “coincides with the rise in the costs of living and business expenses across Australia”.

“Many of our families are new arrivals to Australia or recent migrants or from working-class backgrounds across Adelaide,” Dr Khair said.

“We engage with our families and try to find the suitable point to provide the services at a price point they can afford.”

Public consultation on the proposed upgrade is open until Wednesday June 12.
