Costco in Adelaide has been slammed by customers for the introduction of self-service checkouts, which landed in store in early August.
Loyal customers took to social media to slam the move, with many stressing that the $65 annual membership should warrant only manned checkouts.
“Prob ridiculous to pay a membership to serve yourself,” wrote Christine Ferrier on the Costco Adelaide Customers Facebook page.
Others in the group, which has almost 42,000 members, stressed that a self-checkout was a “massive pain” when buying bulk items.
Jeremy Liu added, “Tried yesterday, quite unpleasant experience, especially I got (sic) those heavy drinks pack.”
Another member replied, “We had 8 boxes of drink cans was a pain in the a! (sic)”
The post has since attracted almost 100 comments, with many being furious that the self-checkouts also only took cash – and were not easy to use.
Wendy Williams wrote, “I love self serve but these suck, due to no handheld scanners (have to remove all items from your trolley even if you have 10x36pkts of cans). The scanner cant read large long barcodes (they require an attendant) and they don’t take cash. So they’re pretty s**t actually.”
And while most customers in the group were unhappy about the move, there were a few that supported the introduction of self-serve.
Annette Curypko told the group, “Love the self serve, not for everyone, and if you don’t like them then just line up to be served!.”
The Adelaide Advertiser has reached out to Coscto Adelaide for comment.
