Construction has begun on a $6m makeover of Adelaide’s biggest suburban theatre, with a revamped bar, enhanced lighting and new “superior backstage facilities” set to bring the beloved institution back to life.
The Hopgood Theatre, in Noarlunga, has already undergone a refurbishment of its roof, while work on the 492-seat centre’s internal upgrades is now underway.
Onkaparinga Mayor Moira Were said the upgrades would deliver a “new era” for the theatre’s thousands of annual attendees.
“This refurbishment responds to community feedback and will result in a technologically superior and more modern theatre to help attract a broader range of performances and make for a more engaging audience experience,” Ms Were said.
“The Hopgood Theatre has been the home of performing arts in the south since 1985, and this project will ensure it continues to serve the community for decades to come.
“I can’t wait to see it open by the end of 2025 and to see the return of arts lovers, schools and local, national and international acts.”
In 2022, TAFE SA struck a 25-year lease agreement with Onkaparinga council to save the Hopgood Theatre, after the state government announced plans to discontinue its funding in 2019.
Works will include flooring and new upgrades enhanced lighting and sound, improved bathrooms, revamped front of house and bar, and superior backstage facilities.
The theatre is expected to open at the end of 2025.
