Cibo Espresso Prospect Road closes after the business owner meets with liquidators

Regulars at the popular cafe have been disappointed to learn their favourite coffee shop has abruptly closed its doors.

A popular cafe in the inner north has been placed into liquidation with its doors shutting this week.

The Advertiser understands Cibo Espresso Prospect Road closed this week after the business owner met with liquidators.

City of Prospect councillor Jason Nelson told The Advertiser the doors were shut in a disappointing outcome for both the owners and the community.

Mr Nelson had earlier posted on social media to express his appreciation for the hard work the owners had put in to running the busy coffee spot.

“Business is hard, retail is even harder. Unless you have lived it, most people will judge without thinking,” he said.

“I was saddened yesterday to learn that Cibo Espresso Prospect Road was placed into liquidation.

“I’m sure the location will be saved by the master franchisor, but you will never replace the beautiful, kind and humble owners that worked their butts out for 20 years in that business to service our amazing community.

“The City of Prospect and our community will miss your spirit and friendly service.”

In November last year, it was revealed Adelaide’s Cibo Espresso cafes would transition to become Gloria Jean’s outlets after a coffee coup.

The state’s 22 stores have been acquired by Gold Coast-based Retail Food Group (RFG), which wants to convert the shops to Gloria Jeans outlets.

Soon after, a petition was launched to save the South Australian coffee icon. The petition, launched by the Liberal Party, stated the move risked the loss of the Cibo brand as well as hundreds of jobs.
