When a scion of Aussie acting royalty joins the cast of the Queen of Crime’s classic whodunit for a platinum jubilee, Her Majesty’s Theatre is the perfect location.
The 70th anniversary production of the world’s longest running play, Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap, is coming to Adelaide after Christmas, opening on New Year’s Eve.
And its cast will include Charlotte Friels, daughter of Judy Davis and Colin Friels, making her professional debut.
“I’m thrilled that The Mousetrap will play in my home town of Adelaide,’’ said producer John Frost, for Crossroads Live Australia, announcing the limited season today.
The classic London production will be recreated for Australian audiences in a feast of pure nostalgia.
The show has clocked up more than 28,500 performances since it debuted on London’s West End in 1952 – the year of the Queen’s coronation.
For Frost, it is a perfect symmetry with the Queen of Crime’s own milestone.
Christie’s murder mysteries – the first published more than a century ago – have been read by billions.
The Poirot and Marple TV adaptations are rarely off the small screen – just one of the reasons Frost is certain the “charming’’ production – “it is like you are going to the theatre in 1952 when it opened’’ – will be a monster hit.
Stage legend Robyn Nevin will direct a blue-ribbon cast including international star Anna O’Byrne.
Waitlist at themousetrap.com.au to be first in line in Adelaide to buy tickets, which open from Friday after presales starting Monday.
