Adelaide traffic: South Eastern Freeway delays and Pulteney St intersection goes dark

Two separate incidents that caused commuters headaches this morning have been resolved but warnings about back-to-school traffic remains.

Adelaide commuters should plan for delays.

A power outage that took out two sets of traffic lights in the Adelaide CBD has been restored, while congestion around a rollover on the South Eastern Freeway has cleared.

The two separate incidents had caused delays for commuters in the city and from the Hills area.

The lights on Pulteney St – near Angas St and Carrington St – were offline due to a power outage but supplies were restored by about 8.30am.

SA Power Networks’ outage finder had reported 403 customers were affected in the outage just after 6am Monday.

Meanwhile, a car rollover on the South Eastern Freeway caused long delays for commuters on Monday morning.

The incident was reported about 7.20am, with inbound traffic initially backed up from Crafers to Bridgewater.

Buses were detoured through the Adelaide Hills to avoid part of the banked-up traffic, with hundreds of commuters set to arrive late to work.

The route has since cleared.

It comes as RAA urges drivers to take extra care today as school returns for Term 4.

Drivers should be aware that school zones in SA have a speed limit of 25km/h whenever children are present, and school pedestrian crossings are set to be in more frequent use from this morning.

Motorists can also expect travel times will increase on key roads during the morning peak period – which is usually worst between 8am – 9am – as well as the afternoon rush.

RAA Senior Manager Road Safety Charles Mountain urged drivers also need to be extra careful around school zones from today.

“School is back for the final term of the year, so traffic will be heavy and thousands of students will be riding or walking near schools as they head to class,” Mr Mountain said.

“If you want to beat the morning rush, leaving by around 7.30am will usually mean you should miss the worst of it.

“Otherwise, it’s a good idea to leave a few extra minutes for your journey during the morning and afternoon peak periods.”
