A controversial greengrocer in Adelaide’s north-eastern suburbs has referred to the Matildas squad using a derogatory term in a Facebook video that has been viewed 17,000 times.
The viral video lasting more than four minutes posted on Tuesday features St Bernards Fruit and Veg Market owner John Kapiris and starts with him promoting the Rostrevor store’s fruit and vegetable produce while holding a sword.
Mr Kapiris then refers to the FIFA World Cup contenders as “carpet munchers,” going on to say the “Matilda’s are kicking a*se at the moment”.
“I want to be apart of it God bless you girls, yous are doing good” Mr Kapiris said in the video.
“Even though youse are all carpet munchers, I don’t give a f*ck. I don’t care that youse are all carpet munchers.
“I don’t care if they are munching on the carpet … I do not care.
“That’s good luck to them man, if they want to much on the carpet and kick the goals, I don’t give a sh*t.
“Good luck to you girls. Good luck to yous, (sic) anyway I’m not being disrespectful at all, that’s being carpet munchers.”
Mr Kapiris continued his promo by walking through the market – frequently tapping his machete on produce – even slicing open a sack of potatoes for viewers to see their “quality”.
When contacted by The Advertiser on Thursday, Mr Kapiris said he posted the video for “a bit of fun” and meant no harm by what he said.
“I’m definitely not homophobic,” he said.
“I was barricking for them (the Matildas) 100 per cent ... I made a pizza for them.”
The St Bernards Fruit and Veg Market Facebook page has 132,000 followers and the fourth generation Greek-Australian businessman has garnered his attention for controversial behaviours and rants.
Mr Kapiris was charged with hindering police and disorderly behaviour in March last year after police attended his business and found him in his underwear.
His arrest triggered a heated confrontation with two police officers who eventually pepper sprayed Mr Kapiris and his 15-year-old son inside his Rostrevor business.
Mr Kapiris always maintained his innocence, saying it was a case of misidentification by the Police.
The charges were later thrown out in court.
Last year, Mr Kapiris, who has run the Rostrevor store alongside his wife Leannda for 13 years, made headlines for a viral rant unleashing on supermarket chains for “jacking up their f****** prices”.
In the video, viewed more over 700,00 times, he attacked bigger retailers, saying “greedy corporations refuse to reduce the mark-up they make across all their lines of fruit and vegetables”.
