Sneak peek: Inside Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s wine cellar

The contents of just what wine Prime Minister Scott Morrison has stored at Kirribilli House and The Lodge has been revealed as the government releases the details of its wine stores.

'Coalition right to refuse extra handouts'

Wine experts described Tony Abbott’s wine cellars as “tragic” while Malcolm Turnbull’s were deemed “embarrassing”.

Just what the industry would make of Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s supplies stored at Kirribilli House and The Lodge will soon be known with the government releasing the details of its wine stores.

It can be revealed the prime minister had 253 bottles in stock as at August this year, worth a total of $6416 including GST.

According to the list — released in response to a Labor question on notice — the most expensive plonk was a bottle of 2017 Mount Pleasant Old Paddock Shiraz, which the government valued at $37.18, excluding GST.

The vintage was in good supply with The Lodge recording three bottles.

Next on the list was a bottle of Brown Brothers Patricia Chardonnay 2012 at $37.62 followed by a bottle of 2016 Voyager Estate Chardonnay at $34.54 and three bottles of St Hugo Cabernet Sauvignon Coonawarra 2013 at $32.60.

Also at The Lodge are six bottles of Wolf Blass Grey Label Shiraz 2013 at $31.80 each, five bottles of Clonakilla O’Raida Shiraz 2016 at $34.53 and three bottles of Jansz Brut Cuvee sparkling wine at $31.95 each.

The most well-stocked wine is the 2017 Nick Oleary Riseling at 15 bottles.

Gone are former Labor leaders Kevin Rudd’s bottles of Elderton sauvignon blanc Semillon which at the time were priced at $7.92 each.

At the bottom of the barrel is a $14.50 bottle of 2002 Miranda Golden Botrytis Riverina NSW.

Over at Kirribilli House, the selection is a little more cheapskate, with three bottles of $31.50 Scarborough Museum Black Shiraz 2011 the most expensive of the range.

Ten bottles of Devil’s Lair sauvignon blanc Semillon 2016 took the title of cheapest bottles at $16.09 each.

The Government confirmed the Prime Minister’s Office Suite at Parliament House sourced wine from the stock held at The Lodge.

Labor sources questioned some of the price given for wines, noting the $37.18 shiraz — which would sell for $40.80 with GST included — was advertised at $49.95 at Dan Murphy’s while the St Hugos was selling for $60.

The scrapping of the three categories that traditionally governed what wines should be used for which purpose — tier one reserved for VIPs with tier two for the prime minister’s personal consumption — was also noted, with a Labor source suggesting Mr Morrison now had access to any bottle he wished.

It is understood Mr Morrison, who currently drinks a Sutherland Shire beer “Hairyman”, was unaware the “consumption categories” had been abolished.

“This is a matter for the department,” a spokesman said.
