While Saturday’s clash between Hobart and Claremont may not be a preview of what’s to come this September, the battle for a maiden win means it’s shaping up as one of the fiercest contests in the SFL Community League.

The Tigers and Magpies will face each other for the first time this season with both teams yet to win a game.

But despite having not won a game, on paper the two are perfectly matched with just four points separating them for scoring this season.

The round 7 clash will be available live and exclusive on KommunityTV this Saturday from 12pm.

Tigers coach Allen Christensen said his side has had moments to get their first win and was confident they could take the next step this weekend.

“We have been in games, and had moments where we thought if we get a goal or two we could get back into a game,” Christensen said.

“I thought we were pretty good at New Norfolk and thought that was a good opportunity where we could have won.

“10 minutes into the third quarter, we are beating Lindisfarne by 10 points, there are moments where we look at games and if we really take the game, we put ourselves in better opportunities to win.

“In terms of this week, there is four points difference in terms of scoring so if we don’t defend well then they can chop us up.

“They have got that ability to kick goals, they kicked seven goals in a quarter against Lindisfarne and they’ve had some games where they have scored heavily.”

Claremont average just shy of 60 points a game for the last four weeks, a massive step up from a side who averaged 11 points in the first two games.

But Magpies coach Nathan Senior isn’t worried too much about the scoreboard.

“We aren’t looking at the process of the scoreboard, we are looking at what we are doing right and doing wrong and chipping away and every week we are improving,” Senior said.

“Getting vision of the games has been great for us because I have been able to show the boys where we are doing some good things, some positives and some negatives.

“We are feeding them off that and every week we are improving and that is all I can ask for.

“That is just the nature of the beast that everyone is after the four points but in saying that we are just ticking off what we are doing.

“We are going out there as hungry as ever, it is just the nature of it that everyone wants to get out there and win and we are no different, we are young and we are dangerous on the day if we get everything right.”

It is the first year the Tigers are under former Geelong and Brisbane Lions player Christensen.

Christensen said it has been a big change but a great challenge from coaching Lauderdale to Hobart.

“It is just like a change in coaching style,” Christensen said.

“You spend a little bit more time one-on-one, a bit more development stuff, not having as big a coaching staff, so you are a bit more hands on which has been good.

“It suits my coaching style a lot better, I am enjoying that aspect of it for sure.”

Christensen hasn’t played a game this season and likely will miss the whole season due to recovering from a knee injury.

“It’s probably not a this year type of thing,” Christensen said.

“I get to see the surgeon in the next month or so and we will reassess what sport looks like but it’s more about my wellbeing and life.

“I still want to play footy, I still feel like I was playing decent footy and being a playing-coach as well, there is different aspects to it.

“It has been tough, the start of the year was pretty awful, I spent a bit of time in hospital.

“With me and Oscar Shaw missing, it has given some guys a bit more leadership opportunities on the ground.

“We will both hopefully be back playing next year.”
