Queensland juveniles who are found guilty of rape will be subjected to harsher penalties as the state government is set to pass the latest changes to the Premier David Crisafulli’s Adult Crime, Adult Time law reforms before parliament on Wednesday.

Another 19 offences, including sexual assault, were included in the amended Making Queensland Safer bill, which included attempted murder, torture, and arson.

This week alone dozens of juveniles across the state have fronted their local magistrate’s court for alleged rape crimes.

The maximum penalty for teenagers found guilty of rape will be life imprisonment.

A week before the bill was set to be passed, a Toowoomba region teenager was sentenced to serve half of a two year jail term after pleading guilty to five counts of rape.

Another Darling Downs teenager found guilty of violently raping a stranger on a Toowoomba street will released from detention in a week after spending one year and six months in detention.

Neither of these teenagers had convictions recorded.
When the new bill was tabled in parliament on Wednesday, May 21, Community Safety Assistant Minister and former policewoman Janelle Pool said “with or without” the support of the opposition, the government would be passing the bill.

She urged the Labor Party to decide whether or not they would be on the side of survivors or perpetrators.

Opposition Health and Ambulance Services spokesman Mark Bailey said the Crisafulli government only decided to bolster the “botched” bill, including rape and attempted murder, after the mistake was pointed out by stakeholders.

He said called the omissions a colossal mistake.
The anoucment of the changes came after the launch of the Fight for the Forgotten campaign which called on the government to include the offence of rape as part of their ‘adult crime, adult time,’ youth crime law reforms.
More to come.
