WWII Douglas A-20 Havoc Bomber to hit Qld highway

Queenslanders will have the rare opportunity to see a WWII bomber on the road as it’s transported via major highways ahead of its overseas display.

A Douglas A-20 Havoc Bomber, known by its nickname Hell’n Pelican II, currently stored at Royal Australian Air Force Base Amberley in Ipswich, will be transported to Port of Townsville via Westwood and Charters Towers through Warrego, Leichhardt, Capricorn, Gregory and Flinders Highways from Friday.

The aircraft will be loaded onto a naval auxiliary vessel upon arrival on Wednesday to be shipped to Papua New Guinea National Museum and Art Gallery at Port Moresby.

The attack bomber belonged to United States Army 5th Air Force during the Second World War before it was reassembled at Amberley in the 1980s.
