COVID-19 booster shots brought forward to fight Omicron spread

Queensland’s Covid-19 cases have almost doubled overnight with 807 active cases statewide and 369 recorded overnight.

As a result of rising Covid-19 cases, there are 4792 active quarantine notices, with the most (2160) in Brisbane’s Metro North.

It comes as Chief health officer John Gerrard said the outbreak of Omicron was inevitable and necessary.

“It is important at times like this as the numbers increase that we reflect on what we are trying to do and where we are going,” Dr Gerrard said.

“In order for us to go from the pandemic phase to the endemic phase, the virus has to be widespread.”

Of the active cases, 522 are either interstate, other or awaiting assignment while 92 alone are in the Gold Coast.

Metro South has 52 cases, while Metro North has 61 and the Sunshine Coast 29.

Cairns (12), Central Queensland, (1), Darling Downs (5), South West (1), Townsville (12) and West Moreton (17) also have cases.

There are at least five clusters that make up the cases, with exposure sites across 19 areas.

Almost 700 people were placed into quarantine on the Gold Coast while Metro South had 857.

West Moreton had 262 active quarantine notices, with 211 on the Sunshine Coast and 190 in Cairns.
