Experts have called for the 2032 Queensland school year to be rejigged so the winter holidays coincide with the Olympic and Paralympic Games – but many aren’t buying the idea.

It is understood the dates for the 2032 Games were selected with Australian school holiday periods in mind, but currently confirmed dates for Queensland holidays only go as far as 2029.

Between now and 2029 the winter school holidays are due to fall between late June and early July.

The Olympic Games are scheduled to run from July 23 to August 8.

Both the 2018 Commonwealth Games and the 2000 Sydney Olympics fell during school holiday periods.

Australian Catholic University education researcher Dr Paul Kidson said it would make sense for school holidays to fall during the event.

“There’ll be two groups of people: there’ll be people who desperately want to go to the Olympics and there’ll be those who want to get the hell out of here, because it’s just going to be chaotic and it (school holidays) suits both of those groups,” he said.

Dr Kidson said, however, that work would need to be done to ensure a rejig does not make things too stressful for students.

Griffith University education expert Professor Donna Pendergast agreed making the Olympics on the school holidays would be the best option but said it would also likely mean exam dates would need to be pushed back.

A Department of Education spokesman said no decisions had been made in relation to the school calendar for 2032.

Readers, though, had already formed their opinions, with many claiming it was another sign that the Games should not go ahead at all.

Others said there were wider issues to consider, while some had no problem with it.

WHAT YOU SAID

Time for change

Paul

Let’s make school terms the same as many countries in the Northern Hemisphere. 6 half terms in 3 semesters. 10 weeks are too long and the last two weeks are a waste of time.

Summer Olympics 2032 games should be pushed back into September so we don’t have freeze our backside off in July/Aug.

Chris

Why are schools still even a thing? Everything can be done online and self paced. The amount of teachers could be cut by 80% with this model.

I’m fine with it

Jasmine.

All this fuss over a minor change which can easily be accommodated and planned for in the available time frame. Really?

Luke

It’s 8 years away any change should be for 2032 only.

Alison

They should have put the Olympics during the September holidays in Qld – much warmer then also! The 2000 Olympics were in September. It was quite cold in Brisbane in late July early August this year!

Tamara

They did this in 2000 to synch up the holidays across the country.

Queensland students could be in for change.

Seriously?!

Jill

whole thing is a debacle we can’t afford. Hopefully LNP Might look at the books and see how bad our DEBT is and say NO WAY TO ALL THIS STUFF

Ross

Kids in the whole state will be burnt out and year 12’s don’t get a second chance, just because of an event in Brisbane.

Organisers with Olympics tunnel vision should stay in their own lane.

Truth Teller

Too much is made of schools and precocious kids. What about the rest of society?

Games must go!

Ian

There will be no Olympics.

Pedro the elder

Yet again the people of Qld have to completely alter their lives in the name of these 2032 Olympics. What’s next, change to left hand drive cars and driving on the right side of the road, a push to accept the US $dollar and Chinese currency over the counter in our shops.

Greg

There is little chance of most people being able to afford tickets, so I highly doubt there will be too many people wanting to go them. Most will probably be trying to avoid it.

Margaret

They are supposed to be the summer Olympics so why are they being held at the end of winter. They should stop pandering to countries like America and hold them in the summer here, or even better still cancel them completely.
