As time ticks down on the government’s 100-day Olympics review, the Albion Olympic Park team has put forward a proposal to build a 45,000 to 55,000 seat stadium with a simple architecture.
But is it viable for the future after the Olympics?
With Albion being a home to many sports including cricket, rugby and racing, the group argues the site would be easily converted into a mega sporting precinct post-Games, with urban villages, entertainment hubs, and premium commercial properties.
On Saturday, the Albion Olympic Park team’s Co-principal designer Dr Paul Sparshott said the two-phase project would be cost effective and deliverable within the tight seven-year construction window.
“All these developers want to construct a masterpiece but we want to keep the design simple and then dress it up,” he said.
“It’s got to be Queenslander. We’re not flashy. We’re laid-back. So that’s us, cost saving, simple.”
Here’s what you thought of the proposal >>>
WANT IT BIGGER

Queensland needs to consider the longevity of a stadium. What may cost $3b now will probably double in 10 years. I say get on with it, build a totally new super stadium that holds 100,000 people to rival the MCG. We will then get all the major artists and sporting events, if Queenslanders support them. We still have the Gabba and the likes for other events. Short term pain will provide long-term gain for Queensland. Make it modern and fancy with good access and transport. Build it and they will come…

Doesn’t matter where it is, we don’t need another 50,000 seat stadium. We already have 2 or 3. We need a stadium large enough for the Olympics and to attract major sporting and entertainment events afterward. 80,000 should be the minimum.
MJBOY
Needs to be twice that capacity.
Owen
55,000 seats? Seriously? How about 85,000 seats so we don’t have to build another stadium in 5 years when this one is too small.
Kevin
The Albion stadium would be too small, we already have Suncorp stadium of that size. We need a stadium of 60,000 to 80,000.
Need a Legacy

Cheap and nasty is not the way to go. Will make Brisbane the laughing stock of the world. Think big people! The government will waste the unspent money on something else anyway so why save it. Have a decent legacy for the future.

Mass public transport is not within walking distance, it’s a stupid location. Whether we’re spending $2.8b on a cheap stadium option, or $3.2b on an expensive option. As a taxpayer I’ll take the latter as it will lead to a better bang for our taxpayer dollar. If we have to do it (the Olympics) let’s do it once well.

The purpose of the games is to deliver a lasting positive impact. Melbourne sports is what is now due 56 and they had similar arguments. Build a decent stadium that will be the basis for Brisbane in 2100. We will be a city of 4.2m by 2050 with another 1.8m on the coasts. Do it once and do it right. Another temporary stadium in a flood zone is not the solution. We don’t need a QEII 2.0
Paul
Albion Park is a dumb idea - there is no transport there. Victoria Park might cost more, but it can be bigger and it has train lines, bus/metro way right next to it. Legacy is the key here.
Flooding a main issue
Rod
That area is flood prone - it would be built on a flood plain. Also a bit of a walk from the train at Albion.
Fay
Flooding would be the biggest problem and saying they could build it above flood height how high is that given areas around SE Qld have experienced floods higher than 1974 over the last few years so that will need to be taken into consideration as well as public transport because it that area floods no one would get there at all.
A monorail might work as well as buses there are plenty in that area and a ferry terminal with bus connections then Albion train Station is close enough to run shuttle buses to and from that during the games as would Ascot I think in a pinch.
D
The only way Albion Park would be suitable is for the Brisbane city council to start working on this site if it were to be the location by making the whole area flood proof by digging the whole area up and putting in an extra-large piping system to take any water away and not these six-inch piping. Putting any stadium above the flood area is plain stupid and does not fix the problem.
Government’s mistake
Ian
The Olympic Games that I would be surprised anyone wanted! Palaszczuk did no consultation on the matter and now we have this chaos that has been happening for the past 2 yrs.
Tom
The Queensland Government has massive debt. They underfund health, education, police and Crime, roads etc.
Now FNQ needs billions of dollars to fix the Bruce Hwy, damaged other roads, bridges washed away, numerous water and flood damaged government buildings, schools, hospitals, cop-shops, and general government buildings.
Some people want to spend billions on new stadiums for the Olympics, Queensland will go further into debt for the “Cost Neutral Olympics” as described by Annastasia.
