Donald Trump’s bold Gaza proposal has divided opinion across Australia, with some claiming anything different is worth a go. Others, however, insist it isn’t possible.
President Trump this week mooted the US would take over Gaza and remove “all” Palestinians in a bombshell move that could reshape the Middle East.
Mr Trump’s bold plan for the US to take a “long-term ownership position” to redevelop the war-torn enclave – potentially with American boots on the ground – was welcomed by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as a move that could “change history”.
The President also suggested he was prepared to go even further, flagging a decision within weeks on whether to support a far-right push in Israel to annex the Palestinian-controlled West Bank.
“The US will take over the Gaza Strip, and we will do a job with it too,” Mr Trump said.
The move was immediately opposed by Arab leaders, amid fears Mr Trump’s move to effectively reject the creation of a Palestinian state could jeopardise peace in the region after 15 months of devastating fighting sparked by Hamas’s October 7, 2023 invasion of Israel.
In Australia, readers were quick to pile into the debate.
Some said Mr Trump’s plans were not feasible; others said it was worth a shot.

Something different has to be done as the current situation is not working.
This is very different and does two things, Gives Israel an ally in the region and gives the US skin in the game including a US military base in the middle east.

This sounds like over-the-top ambit preliminary negotiating statements by Trump to get Israel & the Palestinians thinking about how to create a viable long-term solution.

So for generations this region has been on “rinse and repeat” and someone wants to suggest doing something different.
About time.

To all the naysayers re this idea, something has to be done differently because the current scenario / approach is clearly not working
It’s a mess

Well done Donald, simply rebuilding Gaza isn’t realistic. Eventually the gazans will do it again and Israel will be forced to defend its self. Time this particular group of arabs were sent somewhere else.

With sights set on the panama canal, Canada, Greenland, and now Gaza, this reeks of empire building.

I wonder how would all those agreeable to Trump’s plan would react if some foreign nation took over Australia and relocated us to some other country so that we no longer had a homeland.

Since the end of the second world war in 1945, the use of force has been prohibited in international law. This is one of the foundations of international law since the creation of the United Nations. The US could only take control of Gaza with the consent of the sovereign authority of the territory. Also Israel can’t cede Gaza to the US.
It can’t work

So he is going to sacrifice American army troops to achieve this. There will be mass resignations.
Abigail
The risk at the moment, even if Trump doesn’t do what he says, is that the mere vocalisation of his proposal is dehumanising to the Palestinian people.
Jim
Isn’t it interesting that NONE of the Arab nations want anything to do with or to support the Palestinians.

Nothing like having several Trump resorts along the Gaza shoreline. Grand delusions and taking lunacy to a new level each passing day. MAGA you betya.

And no mention of rebuilding after the LA fires. Why can’t this sad excuse of a president focus on his homeland where the American people need his support the most?
