Queenslanders have woken to a chilly Sunday with subzero temperatures across the state’s south on Sunday morning.
Applethorpe on the Granite Belt was the coldest place, dropping to -2.5C at 6am. It felt a lot colder though, with the apparent temperature a brutal -4.9C.
Subzero temperatures were also recorded at Warwick, which got as log as -1.2C, and Oakey at -0.7C.
Brisbane fell to a 10.7C this morning with an apparent temperature of 8.6C.
The cold snap is predicted to chill the southeast until Monday.
South-westerly winds will clear the rainband that has covered much of the state since Thursday, ushering in temperatures that will plunge towards single digits from as far north as Mackay and south to the border.
The Bureau of Meteorology has forecasted clear and shivery conditions at Suncorp Stadium. State of Origin kick off should be around 14 degrees, with no chance of rain.
The temperature will drop further as the game goes on and Brisbane will hover at about 10 degrees overnight to Monday.
A spokesman for the Bureau of Meteorology warned that the dry and cool conditions are mostly associated with cracked lips and creaky clothes lines.
“We will have some cooler dry air, the type most associated with cracked lips and creaking washing lines for a few days, before we return to a more typical Queensland winter” the spokesman said.
The Bureau said the cool south westerly winds and low temperatures will remain until midmorning on Monday, before mild and typical conditions return for the week.
