Parts of southeast Queensland are shivering through the coldest June morning in 16 years but temperatures have dropped to insane levels in the southern inland.

The mercury dropped to -5C at Oakey about 6.20 this morning, but for residents stepping outside at the same time, it would have felt closer to -10C. It’s the coldest June morning for the Darling Downs town since 2018.

It was -4.3C in nearby Wellcamp and -3.9C at Applethorpe on the Granite Belt.

Brisbane’s minimum temperature dropped to 5.2C just after 2.30am. By 6am the mercury was sitting at 6.8C but with an apparent temperature three degrees colder.

It was an even chillier start at Brisbane Airport, where the temperature slid to 3.4C at 6.10, with an apparent temperature just below 0C.

The airport temperatures are the coldest June minimum temperatures since 2009.

Bureau of Meteorology Senior Meteorologist Harry Clark said Brisbane has been exceptionally cold this morning.

“We got down to 5.2C in the CBD and that’s the coldest morning for any month since August 2018 and it’s the coldest June morning since 2014,” he said.

“Brisbane Airport got down to 3.5C this morning, so that’s the coldest June morning since 2009 for them.”

Temperatures also dropped below zero at Amberley, with a minimum of -1.6C, Canungra (-2.0C) and Greenbank (-0.2C)

The frost is also creeping north and west, with the apparent temperature at Blackall in the state’s central dropping to -4.8C, with the actual temperature just over 1C.

Mount Isa recorded a minimum temperature of 0.6.

Sub-zero temperatures and frost were recorded across the tropical regions of Queensland on Thursday, with Mount Isa recording its coldest June night in 44 years as it dropped to -0.7C. According to Weatherzone, Richmond experienced its lowest minimum temperature for June in 25 years with -0.1C, while Winton reached freezing point for the first time in 22 years.

Mr Clark said winter had “well and truly arrived” in Queensland.

“It has been a significantly cold morning across South East Queensland,” he said.

“The minimum temperatures across Queensland at the moment are broadly anywhere between five to 10 degrees below average.”

“It has certainly been a fairly prolonged cold snap, and probably made more significant by the fact we had a fairly warm lead up into winter.”

Mr Clark said it could remain cold over the coming days before warming up early next week.

“We will see similar conditions, maybe slightly warmer, for most locations, tomorrow morning and again, Sunday morning,” he said.

“It’s really not until around Tuesday onwards, we see a significant change across the state.”
