A private island in Tweed Heads is up for grabs – and it is sparking the imagination of potential buyers from across Australia.
Tweed River Island, situated just south of the Queensland-NSW border, could be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for buyers to get their hands on a freehold island.
This 5.5ha holm is larger and more accessible than most islands on the market, and is the perfect haven for those wanting an oasis close to civilisation.
With an asking price of about $3 million, the freehold island’s price tag is chump change, according to the selling agent.
Loyal Property Chatswood agent Michael Zhong said Tweed River Island was a bargain for those wishing to build their dreams from scratch, with the work just as rewarding as the final product.
“For other islands across Australia, you would be looking at closer to $20 million to purchase something already developed, and to have this so close to the airport, beaches, and prime Gold Coast attractions, Tweed River Island has so much potential,” Mr Zhong said.
Being a freehold island, a prospective buyer would need to go through several applications with the council in order to begin necessary development, including setting up electricity and plumbing.
However, the council co-operated with previous owners and even built the bridge that connects to Chinderah Bay Drive for private use.
The island is categorised under RU2 zoning, allowing for development on rural landscapes.
The listing advertises capacity to build a boat ramp or single-berth marina, and is of course accessible by boat or helicopter.
While the sellers are in Sydney, Loyal Property Chatswood has received extensive interest and offers from the Gold Coast, Brisbane and across Australia.
Owners would be within walking distance of Chinderah train station, local shops and beaches, and within a 15-minute drive of the Gold Coast.
Tweed Shire Mayor Chris Cherry said prospective buyers were welcome to make inquiries with council but it was important to go into the process with their “eyes wide open”.
“I think it is not as simple as buying it and doing whatever they dreamed of … I would encourage anyone looking at buying this island to do their due diligence,” Ms Cherry said.
The island is also within short driving distances of Byron Bay and Surfers Paradise.
Mr Zhong encouraged anyone with interest in the island to contact Loyal Property Chatswood for more information.
