In what has been a deemed a win for businesses and tourism the Sunshine Coast is set to host multiple events and receive about $10bn in infrastructure funding for the 2032 Olympics.
This comes as the state government’s promise for a direct rail line to the heart of Maroochydore was declared officially dead in the water after Premier David Crisafulli unveiled a blueprint for the 2032 Olympics in Brisbane on Tuesday.
Instead, the state government announced “The Wave” with a the direct rail line from Beerwah to Birtinya followed by a direct metro bus hub to the Sunshine Coast Airport, through the Maroochydore CBD.
Sunshine Coast Business Council Chair, Sandy Zubrinich, yesterday attended the Queensland Government’s presentation of the 2032 Delivery Plan for the Brisbane Olympic and Paralympic Games, announced following a 100-day review.
“Queensland Premier David Crisafulli’s presentation of the 2032 Delivery Plan signifies a pivotal moment in Queensland’s preparations for the upcoming Olympic and Paralympic Games. The plan outlines substantial infrastructure developments aimed at enhancing the state’s capacity to host the Games and deliver lasting benefits to its communities,” Ms Zubrinich said.
“We are particularly pleased with the approval of Walker Corporation’s billion-dollar proposal for a new entertainment venue in the Maroochydore CBD.
“This exciting development includes an athlete village, indoor arena and cultural precinct — all integral to the successful hosting of the 2032 Games and the enjoyment of Sunshine Coast residence well beyond.
“Importantly, it brings private sector investment into delivering critical infrastructure especially considering the current state budget pressures.”
Ms Zubrinich also welcomed the introduction of The Wave.
“The Sunshine Coast has emerged as a significant beneficiary of the infrastructure funding – around $10 billion in seven years – which will lead to long-term legacy benefits for our region,” she said.
“Other wins for the region include the planned upgrades to the Sunshine Coast Stadium and funding for the Sunshine Coast Mountain Bike Centre.”
The Sunshine Coast is set to host Olympic soccer and basketball, marathons, race walk, road cycling, mountain biking, and kiteboarding, as well as Paralympic marathons and cycling.
Andrew Wallace, Federal Member for Fisher, said The Wave was a huge win for Sunshine Coast businesses and tourism – as it would help locals and tourists get around the Sunshine Coast more easily.
“I’ve been a very strong proponent of rail from Beerwah to Maroochydore … I accept that and I don’t walk away from that,” Mr Wallace said.
“However the Wave Project that the Crisafulli Government has announced is a terrific win for the Sunshine Coast.”
He was also pleased the Mooloolah River Interchange was back on track to address congestion.
“It is now time to get on with it. After nearly four years of Labor’s delays and cuts, let’s get shovels into the ground and let’s get cracking. We must ensure that from Caloundra to Conondale and Alex to Aroona, we take advantage of this Olympic-sized opportunity ahead.”
