South Bank’s iconic lagoon emptied for repairs

Even if Brisbane City Council lifts coronavirus restrictions on public pools for this weekend, the “beach closed” signs will remain at South Bank.

South Bank lagoon is empty!

BRISBANE’S iconic South Bank beach, usually open all year, has been closed for repairs.

The empty man-made lagoon and “beach closed” signs are an unfamiliar sight to visitors, with Streets Beach expected to be out of action until June 29.

A Brisbane City Council spokesman said the beach was closed for maintenance to wear and tear.

“Streets Beach is currently closed for maintenance works, which include repairing lining repairs, pipe repairs, plus sand replenishment,” he said.

But if you’re keen for a dip, the boat pool and kids’ water area could be open as early as this weekend.

“We are working towards opening Aquativity and the Boat Pool this weekend, pending Queensland Government approval of a COVID-19 safety plan,” the statement said.

Repairs on Australia’s only inner-city man-made beach started on May 5, but the beach has been closed since COVID-19 restrictions came into place.

Council will announce whether pools will reopen this weekend via its website and social media.
