Brisbane rock legends Powderfinger featured heavily on Triple J’s Hottest 100 of Australian Songs with four entries, with their 2000 hit My Happiness came sixth on the playlist.
While INXS claimed the top spot with Never Tear Us Apart, Brisbane pop stars The Veronicas’ Untouched coming in at number three on the countdown.
Powderfinger bass player John “JC” Collins said he was “so stoked” by the band’s high ranking 15 years after their last major performance at Riverstage.
“I would like to thank everyone who voted for the Fingers, we are so blown away to be included in this list of such amazing Australian songs and artists,” JC said, shortly after My Happiness played.
“I think it highlights just how important it is that we continue to support Australian artists moving forwards so that they can carry on to tell our story.”
Frontman Bernard Fanning also dialled in during the broadcast to thank voters for continuing to connect with the song, describing the result as humbling and a tribute to the band’s enduring place in the national soundtrack.
They also featured heavily on the playlist with four entries, with These Days (14), (Baby I’ve Got You) On My Mind (70), and Fanning’s Wish You Well (57).
The emotional My Happiness, part of their Odyssey Number Five album, was released at the height of their fame.
It marked the first time most Americans had heard of Powderfinger.
Formed in Brisbane in the late 1980s, Powderfinger’s rise from local pubs to national stadiums is etched into Queensland’s musical identity.
Even after their split in 2010, there has been much speculation on whether the band would get back together.
