‘Sick of it’: Aus Day rage goes nuclear as host slams boycott

It’s our national day, but Cricket Australia have made it clear they want nothing to do with it. It hasn’t gone down well with, well, anyone.

As The Courier-Mail first reported, Cricket Australia is blaming television broadcasters Channel 7 and Fox Sports for its decision to schedule the Big Bash final for the day before Australia Day next year because it would have superior ratings to Monday.

Australia Day on the Monday has been set aside as a reserve day, should the scheduled game on Sunday be rained out.

A survey on this website of several thousand fans revealed that 97% wanted cricket to be played on Australia Day which has been pencilled in as a reserve day for next summer’s Big Bash final.

But on his 4BC radio show on Thursday morning, Peter Fegan unleashed: “I don’t care what spin they are going to deliver us this time. I don’t care. They are avoiding Australia Day.”

The radio host said he refused to believe the decision was about scheduling and not politics.

“I’m not buying that it ain’t politics,” he said.

“To me it’s all just a little too convenient.

“It’s a sense of fear of backlash, a reluctance to take a stand – or worse a prioritisation of brand image over authentic action.

“It’s fake, and I for one am sick of it.”

Readers were also quick to pile into the debate, many slamming CA for its view.

Others said politics has no part in sport, while some insisted everyone can make their own decisions.
