The neighbours of a man who was stabbed to death in a Brisbane street have told how they confronted his alleged killer with bats trying to save him before they were allegedly threatened with a gun.
Bonita Vivien Coue, 53, has been charged with the murder of her ex-husband Kerry Michael Rooney, 51, near his Newmarket residence.
About 7pm on Wednesday, Genghis Watts and his partner Tahnia Pritchard heard the screams of a man begging for help in the middle of their street, and tried to save his life.
When they came outside, they witnessed a woman allegedly still striking blows to the victim who was in a struggle, not yet on the road, with multiple stab wounds and in unbelievable pain.
“When we came outside the man already had multiple stab wounds, and then the woman sprayed him in the face, and began striking him in the chest with the knife again,” Mr Watts said.
“Then she was all over him, and continued to stab him,” he said.
“We were yelling at her, what the f*** are you doing, why have you done this.”
Mr Watts and Ms Pritchard’s father were screaming at the woman telling her to stop before Ms Pritchard returned to the street with two bats.
“I went to the house to try and find the bats but they weren’t together, I then grabbed them and brought them out to the boys,” Ms Pritchard said.
Mr Watts then confronted the woman with the bat before she backed away to the driveway and pulled out a gun.
He then screamed out to the other bystanders and told them she had a gun, the group of neighbours then took refuge behind the unit mailboxes.
Following this, the woman sat on an abandoned couch by the roadside, only feet away from her ex-partners body, and watched him bleed.
“When the police arrived she just stood up peacefully, put her hands behind her back, got on her knees and waited to get arrested,” he said.
Ms Pritchard said the ordeal was ‘so twisted’ and the woman’s temperament was cold and emotionless.
“There was no emotion, she was silent the entire time,” Ms Pritchard said.
“Seeing the entire attack unfold was just sickening.”
The couple said the situation was terrifying.
“It was so scary, but I knew I couldn’t just run away and hide,” Mr Watts said.
The couple said they would be moving away immediately, and have already packed their bags.
“We are going to move out today, I can’t deal with how traumatic last night was, we never want to drive through this street again,” Ms Pritchard said.
