The newest QPAC venue in South Bank has been named the Glasshouse Theatre.
The name was chosen in recognition of the building’s glass facade and decided on by a poll that gathered 5000 responses.
Minister for Arts, John-Paul Langbroek, said the venue would be “ready by practical means” at the end of this year.
A more specific finish date could not be given.
The inaugural performance would be in 2026 with the minister hinting at acts already booked.
So far the cost of the theatre has reached with $184 million, with $25 million contributed by QPAC.
The minister said the cost had not risen past the current reported figure.
When completed, the Glasshouse Theatre will make QPAC Australia’s largest performing arts centre under one roof.
A quartet from the Queensland Youth Orchestra had the honour of being the first to perform on the half finished stage.
Alex Arthur, the principal viola player for the orchestra, said the acoustics of the theatre were already impressive, even unfinished.
The theatre is still very much an active job site, with much work left to go to meet the completion deadline.
