Broncos lock Patrick Carrigan admitted Brisbane needed to do better as a club after Ezra Mam was checked into rehab following a crash last Friday.

Carrigan, in Australian camp ahead of the Kangaroos’ game against New Zealand, said he was sticking by his teammate.

“He’s pretty disappointed, can’t comment too much on things but, yeah, next steps for himself is to make amends and sort himself out with some rehab stuff and move forward as a club and for him individually,” Carrigan told Channel 7.

“I know the quality human he is, he’s a great young kid, got a heart of gold and obviously he’s just made a mistake.

“We have some work to do as a club and so does he and he acknowledges that.”

It comes after the mother of the four-year-old girl who was a passenger in an Uber involved in the head-on collision with Mam revealed her daughter sustained a fractured hip in the crash.

The accident happened on Simpsons Rd at Bardon in Brisbane’s inner west last Friday night.

Police allege Mam failed a roadside drug test and was driving unlicensed. His $4m Broncos contract is in the balance as the club and NRL integrity units investigate the incident.

Mam has not been charged as police await the result of a follow-up test, and he has since entered rehab.

The mother revealed she and her daughter had been moving house at the time of the accident.

She said she and her daughter had been rushed to hospital after the crash, with her daughter suffering injuries.

“She has a fractured hip … she has really bad burns from the friction of the seatbelt,” the woman told 9 News.

The woman also criticised the media attention on Mam, saying there was “not one thing” mentioned about the Uber driver or she and her daughter.

She told the Sydney Morning Herald she wanted to make it known the impact it had had on her family.

It is understood Broncos CEO Dave Donaghy contacted the woman on behalf of Mam.

Mam’s management said in a statement: “Ezra is extremely remorseful. He is concerned, first and foremost, for the other parties involved and understands the enormity of the current situation.”
