A Mackay man has been charged with murder after he allegedly stabbed and killed another man in a caravan park overnight.
The 33 year old allegedly stabbed a 25-year-old man in the neck, face and abdomen at The Park on Farrellys and Broadsound Road.
The younger man’s body was allegedly found in a vacant lot off the Bruce Highway about 3am, about 700m from the caravan park.
The older man had been in police custody before he was charged with murder late Tuesday afternoon
He is expected to appear in Mackay Magistrates Court on Wednesday December 15.
The alleged incident comes after what Ooralea residents feared was an escalating spate of petty crime and violence.
Ooralea resident Francis Watson, who lives near the field where the body was found, said petty violence and crime had been escalating in the area.
“I’m usually up every morning for a walk at 5am or thereabouts, so I caught a part of the morning show,” he said.
“It’s been a while since we had anything like this, we used to only have kids being nuisances but now cars get stolen and people are getting stabbed.
“It’s pretty scary to think what we’re all turning into.”
Police found the 25-year-old man’s body on the side of the Bruce Highway after 3am, about 700m from the caravan park.
“At about 3am this morning, police received a triple-0 phone call from a male person, who had told police that he had stabbed another male,” Detective Inspector Tom Armitt said.
He said the man met police at the caravan park and indicated to officers where the incident had occurred.
Detective Inspector Tom Armitt said the 33-year-old man had been taken into custody on Tuesday and was helping police with ongoing investigations.
“We’ve locked down our primary crime scene of the caravan park, that’ll be taped off and police have excluded everyone,” Inspector Armitt said.
Police recovered a knife at the scene they believe to be the weapon used in the incident.
The body is not believed to have been moved after death.
Emergency services were called to The Park, with a heavy police presence remaining on scene.
Police cordoned off parts of The Park, with multiple officers seen sweeping nearby fields and properties throughout the day.
Traffic around the property at the corner of Farrellys Rd and Broadsound Rd slowed to watch the officers at the scene.
Police urge anyone who may have been travelling on the Bruce Highway at Paget about 2.30am Tuesday morning and may have seen the two men to contact police on Policelink or anonymously via Crime Stoppers.
