Millions in funding has been announced in an LNP election promise for a community facility in Twin Waters.
The incumbent federal Member for Fairfax, Ted O’Brien, has pledged to enable the redevelopment of Apex Camps in Twin Waters if re-elected to parliament.
He said the LNP would deliver $1m to upgrade the facility’s safety and accessibility features, if he was re-elected.
The funding boost would pay for a brand new bathroom block and enhancements to its accommodation facilities to allow the camp to support larger and more diverse groups and maintain a safe and inclusive environment.
Mr O’Brien said this reaffirmed his commitment to supporting youth-focused organisations across the Sunshine Coast.
“For more than four decades, Apex Camp has helped shape the lives of young Australians,” Mr O’Brien said.
“Ageing infrastructure and limited facilities have created barriers for teachers and people living with disability.
“This investment will ensure the camp remains a safe, accessible and welcoming place for all.”
Apex Camp chief executive Keith Fullerton said the funding would be a major step forward and urged Labor to consider matching the funding promise.
“We can now look ahead to the next 40 years of inspiring and empowering young Australians,” Mr Fullerton said.
He said the new bathroom block, in addition to the existing facilities, would allow increasing numbers of young people who identify as non-binary or gender questioning to feel comfortable and included at the camp.
Mr O’Brien called the funding an investment in the “future of our youth, in safety and in equal opportunity”.
Labor was contacted for comment.
