Judge confirms specific parole date for Toyah Cordingly’s ‘depraved’ murderer
A judge has cemented one of the longest non-parole periods in recent history, ordering Toyah Cordingly’s killer not be released before 2048.
One of the longest non-parole periods for a single count of murder in recent history has been officially cemented, with a judge ordering Toyah Cordingly’s killer not to be released before March 1, 2048.
Rajwinder Singh, 41, was sentenced earlier this week to life imprisonment with a non-parole period of at least 25 years, five more than the mandatory minimum non-parole period for murder.
Justice Lincoln Crowley had increased the minimum due to the “vicious, sickening, shocking and depraved” nature of the murder of the 24-year-old at Wangetti Beach seven years ago.
Singh’s sentence was reopened in Brisbane’s Supreme Court on Thursday after Justice Crowley omitted the exact date for parole eligibility at the hearing in Cairns on Tuesday.
On Thursday he ordered Singh be eligible for parole on March 1, 2048.
The resentencing ran for less than five minutes.
Singh appeared via video link wearing a blue turban.
He wore white throughout the trial.
