Jackie Trad resigns from Queensland govt frontbench

THE mood in the state electorate of South Brisbane was mixed yesterday, following the news Jackie Trad had resigned from her ministerial duties.

West End resident Karen Healy said she was concerned about “procedural fairness” and that Trad shouldn’t have resigned until the CCC delivered their findings.

“It feels very close to an election for these allegations to come up,” Ms Healy said.

“Having grown up in the Joh Bjelke-Petersen era, we fought for having CCC investigations and I want them used properly.

“If there is wrongdoing, fine, but until then there has to be an assumption of innocence.

“Already we see on Twitter people calling for her not just to resign but no longer run in the state election, and that really worries me.”

Dennis Longstaff said he was concerned the resignation indicates wrongdoing and said it made it appear that Ms Trad might be guilty.

“But I do like her, I think she is a good politician,” he said.

Other residents from the electorate who spoke with The Courier-Mail at Orleigh Park in West End under the promise of anonymity said it would be a difficult election for Trad to win.

“This election year was always going to be a hard year for Labor,” one West End resident said.

“There was all that talk of her being parachuted to a safer Labor seat ... I don’t know how well she will do here given the popularity of the Greens candidate here.”

Another woman said that Ms Trad “deserves what is happening to her”.

“She cannot continue on,” she said.

“She is a woman who has had a great deal of power and has been involved in many of the buildings here in Brisbane.

“I don’t respect her... she thinks she can do exactly what she wants.”

The mother of a family-of-four from the electorate said stepping aside from her portfolio was the correct political move for Trad.

“It was the responsible thing for her to do,” she said.

“It was not a good look for the government and it was probably the right thing that she has resigned.”
