A 21-year-old woman has died, teenager is fighting for life and a man in his 60s has been taken to hospital following a horror head-on crash on a wet regional highway near Gympie.
The three were injured in the shocking the two-vehicle crash on the Mary Valley Highway at Gilldora, about 14km south of Gympie, about 11.45am.
It is understood the two vehicles, a blue Ford ute and white Holden Colorado, collided head-on on the road which was wet from a recent downpour and had a 100km/h speed limit.
A Queensland Ambulance spokeswoman said the young man, the driver of the Ford, was flown to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital by helicopter just after midday in a “life-threatening condition” from a chest injury.
Police said the woman, a passenger in the Ford, died as the scene.
The man, a 67-year-old from Redbank Plains who was driving the Holden, was taken to Gympie Hospital in a stable condition with a chest injury.
Emergency services said one person was initially trapped in the wreckage of the crash.
Police shut the road for several hours, and are calling for anyone with information or dashcam footage to come forward.
The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating.
