Police have charged a 76-year-old man after a dog was injured following an alleged baiting incident at Clayfield in late May.

Police will allege Clifford Grahame Day threw a poisoned substance over a Hockings Street fence, which was then ingested by a two-year-old cattle dog.

The dog was transported to a nearby vet for emergency surgery, police said.

Day was charged last month with one count each of lay bait or substance, and wilful damage.

His matter was mentioned briefly in Brisbane Magistrates Court on July 2.

According to court documents the substance allegedly laid by Day was rat poison.

His solicitor Colleen Battersby of Potts Lawyers sought an adjournment to take instructions from Day.

Day, who was not required in court, had his bail enlarged.

The matter was adjourned to July 30.
