Premier David Crisafulli’s flagship election policy to reduce the number of victims of crime will be put to the test today as the critical crime data is revealed.

The Premier will today meet with the police commissioner for a briefing on the number of victims of crime for the first half of 2025.

“I’m very confident, based on some of the other figures, the indicators that things are heading in the right direction,” Mr Crisafulli said.

“I’ll be briefing cabinet on that, and then I’ll be sharing that with Queensland,” he said.

It came as the state government revealed on Sunday the number of serious repeat youth offenders had fallen, while refusing to specify targets to measure the success of combating crime, other than a focus on “fewer victims”.

Mr Crisafulli said “fewer victims than the year before” was the state government’s priority.

“It’s what I said before the election, and that is fewer victims of crime than the year before, now that’s a pretty big order,” he said.

“It hasn’t happened for over 10 years, but I’m very confident that the steps we’ve taken will deliver that and all of these indexes, they’re pointers, they’re things that we have to look at, but ultimately it is fewer victims that matters, that is priority one, two and three.”

Mr Crisafulli said in the first six months since the introduction of “adult crime, adult time” numbers of serious repeat youth offenders had fallen by 17.5 per cent.

“Now that’s pleasing, and there has been a reduction in every region,” he said.

“It is victim numbers that will be our focus.”

Youth Justice Minister Laura Gerber said the state had turned a corner.

“We know that over the last 10 years, crime was out of control in our communities, and particularly youth crime and that victim numbers rose year on year,” she said.

Opposition youth justice spokeswoman Di Farmer said Mr Crisafulli had staked his leadership on fewer victims.

“We continually see David Crisafulli cherry picking data to try to show that his botched laws have worked,” she said.

“We see numbers of serious repeat offenders which were starting to go down under Labor, but what we’re not seeing is victim reduction numbers, he is being slippery about the targets he is setting to reduce numbers.”
